What If You'd Been Running at 10/10?

The extraordinary possibilities of a life with less wasted energy.

The thought experiment

Picture yourself at 18, but with everything you know now. You sleep well because you protect it. You notice when you're running on empty and you recover before it costs you. You don't spend years on habits, jobs or relationships that drain you dry. You spend your energy where it gives something back.

Where would you be now?

For most of us the honest answer is: further. Not because we'd have worked harder, but because we'd have wasted less.

The cost of the friction

Most lost energy isn't lost in a crisis. It drains away in small amounts, every day: broken sleep, constant interruptions, decisions that didn't need making, and stress that never quite switched off. Each one is minor. Over years, they add up to a different life.

No one is to blame for that. We were never taught to think about energy this way. We were taught to push through, to chase the next high, and to rest only when we'd earned it.

And not every hard year is wasted potential. Illness, grief, trauma, caring for others and circumstances beyond anyone's control aren't inefficiencies. They're part of a real life. This isn't about blaming yourself for what you couldn't change. It's about reclaiming what's within your control from here.

What's changing

In our view, three things are changing at once.

  • We can see it. Wearables now show things that used to be invisible: how we sleep, how we recover, and what a late night really costs.
  • We can offload it. Automation and AI can take on the repetitive admin and small decisions that used to eat into every day.
  • We understand it better. The science of sleep, light, recovery and stress is clearer and more widely shared than ever.

Together, they make it possible to optimise from much earlier in life, and to correct course much faster at any age.

Is this where we're heading?

We think so. Not towards a world of perfect, protocol-driven people, but towards one where wasting energy on the rubbish becomes the exception rather than the norm. Where the next generation grows up knowing how to switch on and switch off. Where the default is a life with more in the tank.

That's a prediction, not a promise. But it's the direction we're building towards.

And if you're starting now?

You can't go back to 18. You can start today, and every year from here counts. Begin with the foundations: protect your sleep, get daylight, move regularly, and cut one source of daily friction. Then let the right technology make those habits easier to keep.

The best time to start was at the beginning. The second best is now.

The Toolkit

Start with what's free: sleep, daylight, movement. Then let technology make it easier to keep going.

  • A wearable that shows your patterns: see what a late night, a hard week or a good routine actually does to your recovery. A guide, not a diagnosis. Wellness & Sleep picks
  • Smart home routines: lights, heating and reminders that run themselves, so there are fewer small decisions in your day. Smart Home picks
